Trailer Tips and Tricks

The Empty Trailer

By:  Buford Davis

I hear you got a problem that needs fixing: you got an empty trailer and you want to know what to do with it. I myself had this dilemma a few months back.  Several years ago I bought a 1965 classic Titan. Titans, as you know, were manufactured by Winnebago back before they went strictly into motor homes. This is a great home built back when home manufacturers put pride in their work. It took some fixing to bring it up to my standards of a rental but it sure was worth it. I had it rented out for about 16 months to this cool dude named Jim.  We used to hang out over there all the time, you know partying and watching wrestling.  But all good things must end, Jim had to go back upstate for 3 to 10 and left me with an empty trailer and an answer to your question, "What to do with it?"  I say start a business with it!

As I have traveled this great nation collecting photos and information about mobiles for my yet unfinished book "Love and Life in an American Trailer" I have seen some great ideas on using your home for a business.  Everyone knows the wave of the future is working out of the home. A friend of mine down in Florida took a couple of old gutted out trailers and started a worm farm, very profitable and he could live on site and save commuting time. Think how much time and effort all those Silicon Valley folks would save if they just got trailers and moved them into that valley!  With a little help with some friends, I came up with the drive around liquor store idea. My motto was "From my front porch to yours I'll bring the booze to you". This was by far my best business idea, made me a ton of cash, but I had a small problem with the law, bringing me to my most important tip, always consult your local laws before starting any business, mobile or otherwise. I now have the home rented out as a billboard to some local politician for $100 bucks a month until November. Then I'll find something else to do with her, the possibilities are endless. Down south I saw a trailer used as a bar-B-Q stand, and my sister saw one up north used as a hostel. Here are some pictures of one out in the southwest I saw one turned into an Indian taco stand. They used the living room window as an order window. I've also seen them used as everything from smoke shops to day care canters to fireworks stands. All across this great land the things you can do with your trailer are endless, so all you future money making business men and women get out there and do it. Happy trailering!
